Not Themselves Inheritable

‘Not themselves inheritable’ is a physical and ephemeral ongoing family archive from 1996 that accesses intimate family histories and reflects not only the physical custodianship of an archive and collection, but the interwoven lived experiences, emotional weight and personal memories.

The family archive holds a body of work first initiated by my father, who pursued an archaeology a-level at a local collage during full-time employment in insurance. With the support of his wife Erika who captured the project on film, Clive documented his pursuit of building a replica neolithic longbow using stone tools. Clive’s journey included travelling to Norfolk to meet expert flint knapper John Lord, a trip to visit the Meare Heath Bow at the Unviersity of Cambridge Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology. Sharing his journey through many processes flint knapping, woodworking, cordage making, a profound childhood experience of being introduced to experiential archaeology has defined my approach to materials, process and investigative research.
The documentative drawing series captures old and new tools and equipment belonging to father and daughter which entwines emotional and observational connections that take archival images beyond static modes of documentation. After receiving the AN Time and space bursary in 2022, my father and I spent a weekend with Will Lord (son of John Lord) learning to build a composite lowbow and arrow fletching.

Do we feel off trajectory as we are full-drawn and propelled towards a precarious future? Instead of a straight unidirectional arrow, could we loop back and forth, infinately intertwiningwithin woven circles until the past becomes the present an the future becomes the past We study the materiality of time through literal material, choosing to either preserve or deteriorate it with speed or with slowness. ‘What if time was non-sequential?’ imagines the homeostasis betweenhuman, non human, material, and process amongst an impending climate crisis.

Flight, Fight or Gather
Flight or Fight plays with the tensions of plants, survivalism and craft, depicting a weaponised tool as passive and unusable, drawing upon Ursula K Le Guin’s Carrier bag theory of fiction of how plant knowledge and fibre, often associated as ‘women’s work’ is underestimated by the patriarchal vision of man the tool maker and hunter. A hung carrier and grounded yarn bowl are active recipients, ready and waiting to gather.

Woven, spun or tufted, fibre as a mode of line and time, becomes an extension of the drawing process. Textiles holds both a strength and fragility, usually the first to deterriate, leaving behind its impressions as hardware and tools but now seeping into our bodies as microfibres. Tightly bound to climate, I look at garments as a hylomorphic disconnect from our environment, indicating a turning point for domestication, agriculture, and industrialisation, amongst a complex landscape of cultural and historical contexts. ‘First Furs About Themselves’ acknowledges the first garment as a skin cloak, a secondary skin barrier that shielded, protected and ultimately removed us from our own adaptability in our environment.

Strange Harvest...

explores hand-in-hand ties between

the beginning of woven fibres and the descent of humankind

into sedentary living and agriculture, leading to the present day

and beyond.

Philippa Stewart’s installation presents a new body of work,

with components depicting relics of the past, the emergence of

a garment to be activated in the future, sedentary textiles and

mechanical spindles whorls.

Works sit in a state of in-betweeness, reawakening a primordial

connection amongst an underlying and prevalent sense of anxiety

for the future. Spindles turn like ticking clocks, leading a count down

to the inevitable while archival drawings of hand tools offer

ambiguous instruction to survival.

The skin or pelt, a symbol of death and echo of life shrouds and protects

its wearer as it transitions from the simple skin to skin cloak, to the complex

woven sleeved tunic mirroring the double edged sword of ‘advancement’.

Materials feature a combination of natural dyed, found, foraged,

reclaimed with repurposed woven fabrics.

Philippa’s practice explores a determination to reconnect with the natural

world through ancient technologies and material culture first

established in prehistoric hunter-gatherer civilizations. Family and heritage

form an active role in her approach, exploring the importance of

sharing practical skills and exchanging experiences between

father, mother, daughter and brother.

Her fascination with survival and adaptation extends to fibre and the

development of the first garments from skin to cloth, leading to the

turning point between nomadic and sedentary living. The

disintegration of historical fibre leaves small traces of its existence

in universal hand tools such as needles and spindle whorls, creating

a realm of speculation in which Philippa’s works embellish

archeological truths, repurposes modern materials,

forges and misplaces replicas and reimagines an alternative future.

Marking the Land
Event: Guest speakerPublication: contributer, illustrator and designer

Marking the Land is a new publication from James Ravinet and Shaun C Badham. Conceived as a hyper-localised walking guide traversing a 4.5 mile circular section of The Essex Way, the project considers the radical nature of walking in enacting the permanence of public rights of way through our literal, physical trace in the landscape. With the reintroduction of a deadline under the Countryside Rights of Way Act 2000, the year 2031 will be the final opportunity to register forgotten paths, posing a threat to some 49,000 miles of routes and reinvigorating a new urgency to prevent the conclusive loss of public land and knowledge. Beginning at Fairstead and looping back through Terling, the route passes several historical sites including 14th century frescoes, folkloric puddingstones and a former Smock Mill. Beyond these landmarks or artefacts, the publication looks to the landscape for deeper meaning: from land speculators and the agricultural depression to early examples of activism to reinstate disused paths in Essex. To be enjoyed remotely or as you follow the path, the project was initially conceived as a guided walk in 2022 to mark the 50 year anniversary of the Essex Way. Marking the Land is published by The Old Waterworks, and designed, illustrated and co-written by artist Philippa Stewart.
Supported by the Essex County Council Arts and Cultural Fund.
