First Furs About Themselves

Woven, spun or tufted, fibre as a mode of line and time, becomes an extension of the drawing process. Textiles holds both a strength and fragility, usually the first to deterriate, leaving behind its impressions as hardware and tools but now seeping into our bodies as microfibres. Tightly bound to climate, I look at garments as a hylomorphic disconnect from our environment, indicating a turning point for domestication, agriculture, and industrialisation, amongst a complex landscape of cultural and historical contexts. ‘First Furs About Themselves’ acknowledges the first garment as a skin cloak, a secondary skin barrier that shielded, protected and ultimately removed us from our own adaptability in our environment.
