‘Art Makes Children Powerful’

Commissioned by Metal Culture, Southend
May - July 2022

‘Art Makes Children Powerful’ paired Essex based artists with local schools and commissioned to facilitate creative projects with local teachers by Metal Culture.

Working with Darlinghurst Primary School:

A bespoke programme of workshops was delivered across years 2 to 5 at Darlinghurst Academy. We focused on process driven creative skills centering hand-eye coordination and handling natural and recycled materials.

Workshops embedded drawing, casting, model making, spinning fibre, making cordage, den building, wattle and daub building and sculpture making.

Three collaborative sculptures inspired by ancient fish traps and roundhouses were made by pupils. These works became a movable sculpture trail for the school.

‘In Summer 2022, Metal Southend programmed an in-school creative learning project for young people and their teachers, shaped by artists and practitioners living and working in South Essex. The project celebrated creativity in all forms, including hands-on workshops, the investment of new creative equipment for schools, new connections across the art and education ecosystems of South Essex and creative training for local teachers and artists.’
